SBFT is a very useful and effective approach to counselling, which, as the name implies, is mainly used for short term work, meaning something like 6 to 12 sessions. The approach is based on certain questions which lead to an understanding of what change needs to happen to create the life that someone wants to be leading. There is a focus on the exceptions to the problem – in other words, when is the problem not evident? Rather than focus on the ‘problem’, there is emphasis on a preferred future without it, often identified by noticing when the problem isn’t, or wasn’t there. Even if you feel that a series of questions could be tiresome and even intrusive, they can be posed in such a way that it feels just like a conversation, but one in which you are encouraged to really notice things about your life.
